>> Big Billy has $23 billion in cash to throw away on winning this battle. Having multiple manufacturers for the Pocket PC is also a big advantage a la Apple v. IBM PC. <<

Except this time it is Apple (=PocketPC- higher retail price, limited software development) vs. Palm (=IBM PC clones- lower price, pervasive software devlopment)

Retail price in this category is a killer, Palm devices will be selling for $99 in the next year ot two. PocketPC devices cannot hope to beat Palm on price (windowsCE OS license fee gouging anyone????)

And the Palm OS, a much smaller size OS, seems destined to wind up in cellphones as well.

*I am not "in love" or "in hate" with either Palm or PocketPC. I hold no investment positions in Palm, Hand, or MSFT. I merely look at what I think are the real-world conditions for this market segment, and in my observations, low retail price is paramount for mass appeal.

The current rush of techno-junkies buying the very limited quantities of "hot" PocketPC devices (iPaq) should take into consideration the very real shortage of these products (due to component shortages). The real test will be how well the iPaq sells in the future, as the relaitvely small consumer segment of techno junkies becomes saturated and mass appeal may fail to catch on.

We'll only know for sure as it plays out in real life however.
