Talisman's side - The Globe & Mail, September 19
JACQUELINE SHEPPARD

Calgary -- In your account of the Winnipeg conference on children and war (Sept. 11), you report that Talisman Energy helps run an oil project "that human-rights groups say is funding atrocities committed by the Sudanese government in a war against its own separatist rebels."

Your reporter did not contact our company before you printed this unfair account of our involvement in Sudan. Had he done so, he would have learned that Talisman has publicly deplored atrocities committed by both sides in a civil war that began more than 40 years before we invested in Sudan. He might also have learned that Talisman has won praise from human-rights groups because we quickly provided emergency help to about 60,000 displaced people at Bentiu last month. Our company has provided badly needed wells, roads, schools and hospitals at many other locations.

Talisman is an ethical company with the courage to lead a coming wave of constructive corporate and government engagement that will replace ineffective policies of isolationism. Globalization involves more than the movement of goods, jobs and capital among countries. It also involves the exchange of values and ideas. It provides an opportunity to spread the highest standards in ethics, social development and human rights.
