We believe the market for Voice over DSL gateways is likely to gain significant traction through the second half of 2000 and into 2001 as DSL service providers seek to leverage the value of their access lines and offer integrated voice and data services. For CLECs, the opportunity is to bypass high RBOC tariffs for T1 lines with cheaper DSL access lines capable of carrying multiple voice channels. For incumbents, voice over DSL can dramatically enhance the voice carrying capacity of increasing scarce copper pairs. As the network diagram below illustrates, the VoDSL gateway appears as a digital loop carrier to the class 5 switch via GR303 connections. The gateway mediates between the TDM and cell/packet networks while maintaining voice quality and facilitating service delivery via the class 5 switch. The other new network element in the VoDSL architecture is an Integrated Access Device (IAD) located at the customer premise. This device, produced both by the gateway manufacturers such as well as CPE-focused players such as Efficient Networks, Netopia, Vina Technologies, and Woodwind Communications, includes a fair amount of signaling intelligence and delivers multiple voice lines along with a high speed interconnection to the small to medium business market which has been the early focus on CLEC DSL deployments. We believe the VoDSL market represents the first step towards a completely revamped local switching architecture, with several players beginning to offer alternatives to cap or obviate investments in traditional class 5 switches from Lucent and Nortel.
