See BULK SUBSTRATES, semiconducting and semi-insulating

gaasnet.com

AXT provides both. I see the old name still lingers at this site; I sort of liked it, actually. Some of the suppliers listed are just distributors. You may have been thinking of Freiberger Compound Materials of Germany (Groupe Arnaud is a distributor for them in France). Sumitomo is another heavyweight.

Freiberger would be the most direct competitor, imo. They have developed their own VGF crystal growing process, which has been in production since December 1999 (4-inch substrates). However, they have their hands full just satisfying demand from their customers for LEC substrates:

Freiberger is building a new factory emphasizing six-in SI LEC wafers.
