will open as Ames stores along with four other locations in this first wave of
Chicagoland Grand Openings for Ames Department Stores. Two additional
openings are planned for October 2000, bringing our Chicago presence to ten

Ames' Chicago expansion efforts fall in line with the company's strategy of
expanding in urban markets. "We have always done well in urban locations,"
notes Ames' Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Joseph R. Ettore. "Our
stores in markets like Washington D. C. and Philadelphia are among the best
performing stores in our chain, and we look forward to continuing this success
story with our Chicago area stores."

"Our new Chicago store locations are ideal," Ettore continued. "They have
built-in traffic due to the high population density and the demographics are
perfect. We look forward to serving these communities with Ames' trademark
Bargains By the Bagful(R) and A+ customer service."
