JDS Uniphase Seeking More Acquisitions - CFO
Dow Jones Newswires

By Frank Byrt
BOSTON -- Optical networking components manufacturer JDS Uniphase Corp. (JDSU), which has 10 major acquisitions under its belt since its creation a little more than a year ago, is seeking more, Anthony Muller, its chief financial officer, said Monday.

The company is in the process of digesting its most recent deal, the acquisition of SDL Inc.(SDLI), a deal that Muller said should close by year-end.

"Our business is providing components to increase speed and channel density" of computer networks and Internet connections, he said, speaking at the SG Cowen Annual Fall Technology Conference here.

"We are now in a major revolution as the world is becoming more bandwidth-centric," in order to handle more sophisticated Internet applications, Muller said. That demand will be met by fiber-optic network growth, which requires new and more products such as those developed by JDS Uniphase, Muller said.

Demand for optical networking products is seen doubling every six to nine months, "and that phenomenon is what's driving growth at JDS Uniphase," said Muller.

JDS Uniphase, San Jose, Calif., had revenue of $1.8 billion for the fiscal year ended June 30, and Muller said the company is on track to continue a roughly 50% growth rate in revenue in the near-term due to recent acquisitions.

It has roughly a 36% sequential revenue growth rate in existing operations, he said.

Sales were $524 million in the third quarter, which represents a 32% growth rate, with net income at a 33% increase over the prior year. he said.

Operating margins have been in excess of 30% and the company is working to get operating margins lower, he said.

It is also rapidly expanding its manufacturing capacity to meet product demand, Muller said.
