Dear Daniel:

I could make a robotic refueler for less than one of those robotic "touchless" car washers. Again, what do you think one of those gasoline vapor recovery pumps cost? You may be shocked. Remember the design of the system can be mandated by industry consensus and that can reduce the operating parameters to a point where it is cheaper to get a robotic automatic refueling system than an ordinary vapor recovery gasoline pump (users can be such fools and you have to make the pump survice handling by people who abuse the gas pump dispensers far worse than any airport baggage handler (driving away with nozzle still in is just one of the average abuses (an interlock could stop this with a robotic system)). Do not make the mistake of comparing self service station design, and free hand gas tank design against a well designed system that everyone has an interest to make work well.

Alternatively, designing a LiH truck that goes around and fills up your cars (and charges the bill straight to your credit / debit card) without any intervention on your part. A better system would be an EV that recharges using magnetic induction without any connection required at all just proximaty to the car. The whole transaction could be connected with a "free" car wash as the coupling area could be underneath the car and is unaffected by water or soap.

There are many ways to do the same thing and make it a win win situation.
