Don Green, Take a look at Rambus's releases on the subject (you can get them at their web site for both NEC and Hitachi). The agreements include both DRAM and DRAM controllers. Even Jack Robertson has reported it as such in at least 2 different articles that I read from him. BTW, this isn't some mystery you know. The agreement with Hitachi and NEC is for both DRAM and DRAM controllers for the life of the agreement which is for many years (5 years at least as mentioned in one of the CCs). Just because NEC and Hitachi will now be starting a new venture with DRAM is irrelevant. They will still be making controllers. And if they decide to also make DRAM themselves, they'll pay for that too. Here is a quote even from the recent article that Mr. Robertson wrote (I think you posted it) stating that same fact: "Though the patent dispute has revolved around the central issue of DRAM, the licensing deals signed by NEC and Hitachi also extend to the companies' respective microprocessors lines, because both use a synchronous interface. Unlike the DRAM provision, however, the processor businesses will remain with the parent companies and continue to generate royalties for Rambus over the life of the agreements."
