I do use public transportation most of the time when I go in to DC, but for suburb to suburb commutes it rarely is a good alternative and suburb to suburb commutes are becomeing an increaseing percentage of all commutes.

Tim,

You are right....suburb to suburb commuting via public transit sucks. Its becoming a major problem.

It results from 50 years of public planning. We were encouraged to use our cars. Freeways were built....every freeway exit jump started a new suburb....our metro areas began to look like spokes on a wheel. The central core began to die...attempts to save the city were either misguided or inadequate. Commercial, retail and other services began to make the move to the suburbs which began to grow at a very fast rate and had to build more roads.
General Motors bought up a number of light rail/bus lines in the cities and not long after, dismantled them.

The result is generally lousy public transit between cities and their suburbs, and virtually none between suburbs. It will be interesting to see how this all works out.
