Joe may be optimistic about the [fusion] "in our lifetimes" but in the long run it will not be particularly hard.

let's say 50 years, not lifetime, to make it more concrete. I don't think it is unrealistic. I don't think we had nuclear plants 50 years ago. They developed very quickly. Based of fully developed capital markets, once the "recipe" for controlled fusion reaction is discovered, it will not be a problem to throw few 100 billion dollars at the problem to build out power plants very quickly, assuming that the energy costs will be much higher than they are now, since the supply of oil will not keep up with the world demand.
