The traditional reaction to reforming SS has been either to raise taxes, say the problem will correct itself in time or the third rail of politics approach " touch it and you're dead." The system as it stands is grossly unfair to the younger people in the work force.
I agree that it is inevitable that they must reform the system or there will be revolts. (Either by the young paying astronomical tax rates or by the old protesting their reduced benefits.)
I think some left-wing politicians such as Jesse Jackson
are greedily eyeing 401k balances as a future source of taxation.
