SCUMbria - Re: "If the lights were synchronized on streets like Lawrence Expressway, Silicon Valley fuel consumption would drop significantly and productivity would be enhanced. Silicon Valley has quite possibly the worst traffic lights in the country."

Congrats !!

A constructive thought, finally !!

Actually, I have had similar thoughts - but my idea is to turn Lawrence and San Tomas and Montague (and others) into 6/8 lane ONE-WAY EXPRESSWAYS - with NO TRAFFIC LIGHTS - going towards the business district from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM and then REVERSE them from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM (1 hour closure for the changeover).

SCUMbria - Re: "Our children will have good reason to be seriously PO'd when we run out of gas in 20 years. We have squandered it mindlessly. I can think of few things more stupid we do than sit in traffic jams due to bad traffic management."

Let's not use the term "WE" too literally - I haven't been in a traffic jam (going to work) in over 6 years !

Re: "Why can't wireless networks be set up to manage communication between traffic lights?"

The answer is to GET RID OF THE TRAFFIC LIGHTS (see my previous response to you).

Scumbria, Who is responsible for the lights being out of synch? Could it be the same people who enabled the oil and auto industries to spike mass transit?

Your government at work - and you want to give them more power?

I once did an experiment on the San Tomas expressway. Traffic was light (can you believe that?) and I missed 18 of 23 stoplights. Thinking they were timed for the opposite direction, I turned around and tried the other way. I missed 21 of 23 lights....

Scumbria,

Our children will have good reason to be seriously PO'd when we run out of gas in 20 years. We have squandered it mindlessly. I can think of few things more stupid we do than sit in traffic jams due to bad traffic management.

Minor correction. Not We, You are squandering oil, sitting in traffic jams, I am not.

I have a quick suggestion if you want to stop squandering oil: Bicycle

Sumbria,
RE:"Our children will have good reason to be seriously PO'd when we run out of gas in 20 years. We have squandered it mindlessly. I can think of few things more stupid we do than sit in traffic jams due to bad traffic management."

Several years a go I read in Forbes (some Professor wrote the article) that in order to pay for all the government entitlements present and future rate, a child born that day would have to pay upwards of 80% of their income in taxes, throughout their working life. I think a lot of us are up over 50% now...federal, state and local...etc. etc...
How will you explain that to your kids...?

---
Often, traffic lights are asynchonous for the purpose of slowing traffic. This is traffic management...

I remember that 30 years ago we were going to "run out of oil in 20 years"...someday, I suppose.
