John, I have visions of you in face mask and goggles, frozen upright on your bike beside the lake. With wind whipped freezing spray building up the ice coating. I ran eight blocks to the train once in the winter and got frost bite on both ears.

re: It is rather peaceful by yourself at 5 AM on the frozen lakefront with no one else around.

That peaceful feeling is the first symptom of hypothermia.
