QCOM--Certicom Joins with QUALCOMM to Provide Industrial-Strength Security for World's Premier Email Management Client Software
Certicom's Leading SSL and ECC Technologies to Provide Advanced Security for Entire Suite of Eudora Products
PKS 2000, SAN JOSE, CA, Sept. 19 /CNW/ - Certicom (Nasdaq: CERT - news; TSE: CIC - news), a leading provider of mobile e-commerce security, and QUALCOMM (Nasdaq:QCOM - news), a leader in digital wireless communications and advanced electronic messaging solutions for the Internet, today announced that QUALCOMM plans to use Certicom's industry-leading SSL and ECC technologies to provide industrial-strength, high-performance security for QUALCOMM's Eudora product line. The first commercial product by QUALCOMM that will employ the Certicom technology will be Eudora Internet Suite(TM) (EIS(TM)) 2.1 software for the Palm OS(TM) platform. QUALCOMM expects to release EIS 2.1 by the end of the year.
By using Certicom's technology in its award-winning Eudora® products, QUALCOMM will make secure email and web browsing available to millions of people using Internet applications.

"Certicom is the leading provider of efficient security solutions for wireless devices," said David J. Ross, director of product management for QUALCOMM Eudora Products. "As we move desktop applications into wireless devices, we must also provide users the security they expect in the wired world."

Eudora Internet Suite software provides users of Palm OS-based handheld devices the software tools necessary for wireless email and web browsing. The suite bundles Eudora email software, EudoraWeb browser software and the Eudora Mail Conduit (Windows only). It is available as a free download at www.eudora.com/internetsuite.

Certicom's SSL Plus(TM) toolkit is one of the industry's most widely deployed commercial SSL products and enables uncompromising security for a wide range of applications on constrained devices such as Palm Inc. and Windows Pocket PC (WinCE) handhelds, smart phones and other embedded devices that are connected to corporate enterprise, consumer service, and electronic commerce applications.

QUALCOMM is using Certicom's Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) technology and is including support for Certicom's MobileTrust(TM) digital certificates for its Eudora product line. Supporting Certicom's MobileTrust root key will provide for high-speed digital signatures, enabling secure and authenticated Internet communications. Certicom's relationship with QUALCOMM also brings trusted security to premier applications on Kyocera handsets.

"Working from the foundation established by the pdQ(TM) smartphone, Kyocera Wireless Corp. is driving the evolution of the smartphone concept by improving usability and enhancing security for e-commerce applications," said Tim Boyd, senior director of product development for Kyocera Wireless Corp. "Certicom's encryption technologies are key elements for creating a robust security architecture for e-commerce and other sensitive wireless data communications."

"As a pioneer of digital mobile technology, QUALCOMM is a clear leader in the wireless industry and we are pleased to provide them with efficient security for their leading wireless Internet solutions," said Richard Depew, Certicom executive vice president. "By using Certicom's advanced technology, Eudora customer information will be enabled with trusted, high-performance security. QUALCOMM's choice of our technology extends our leadership position in the rapidly growing Internet and handheld computing marketplace."
