"They also had problems with thieves but they did not really need guns under such situations. They would use arms, sticks, stones, dogs and women would use red chili powder, spices on the attackers."

Let's say the home of a 70 year old lady is invaded by a criminal with a knife. What do you think she would rather have, a gun or some chili powder?

Re semi-automatics, they have become the gun of choice because they are shown alot in the movies (the revolver is a fine weapon, but I guess it isn't viewed as being "hip"). It is just another type of handgun, there is nothing evil about them.

<<However, I do not see a reason to possess semi automatics (not suggesting that you do). >>

Go ahead and suggest because I do. There are many reasons for semi autos, my wife shoots one because the felt recoil is less. Same reason a lot of duck and goose hunters use them. Trap shooters use them and they only load one shell at a time.

<<However in urban/semi-urban areas it is a different story. I am concerned about guns falling into wrong hands.>>

The town I live next to is over 100,000 and there are a lot of guns there. Of course there are thousands of men and women in this area who hunt and target shoot. No reason they can't have a gun just because they live in the city limits.

Felons don't register (don't laugh) and the government says they don't have to (stop laughing), just Ish and I. Semi-auto and full auto are "marketed" by your Hollywood friends not gun manufacturers. Local news media also market them with the help of video of police shows involving para-military law enforcement units. Where do you see irresponsible marketing by gun manufacturers? You say proliferation of any weapons is never a good idea. I disagree and say read "More Guns, Less Crime" by John Lott and then tell the criminals not to add to the proliferation of weapons. They're waiting for the new Gandhi, a pied piper or otherwise inspiring leader.

We are proscribed as gunowners to use only appropriate levels of force. You cannot use deadly force to protect property.

Some people do not value guns and have no interest in them. Perfectly OK in my view.
