(NYSE: CPQ - news) and Commerce One, Inc. (Nasdaq: CMRC - news) today announced at eLink 2000 in Las Vegas, a strategic global alliance to accelerate B2B e-commerce development and growth of e-marketplaces. With the agreement, the companies will now focus on a mutually preferred Compaq platform and Commerce One solution deployment strategy that will include joint technology investments, go-to-market programs, expanded field engagement, and integrated solution centers, as well as benchmarking and technology optimization initiatives. Specifically, Commerce One has established Compaq, the leading provider of Windows® NT-based servers, as its preferred hardware platform for Windows NT-based solutions. Compaq will be an authorized reseller of Commerce One products, and Compaq Global Services will be a tier one, preferred global systems integration partner for Commerce One worldwide. Today at eLink in Las Vegas, Compaq President and CEO Michael Capellas intends to discuss the initiative in his keynote address to more than 2,500 Fortune 500 executives in attendance. The goal of the alliance is to drive mass adoption and use of B2B commerce solutions by large and small companies globally through bundled solutions that simplify access and reduce the overall price of entry. Analysts predict that products and services sold through B2B e-commerce will generate more than $7 trillion worldwide by 2004, with e-marketplaces driving nearly 40 percent, or $2.7 trillion, of these transactions. (1) As more and more businesses participate in e-marketplaces and liquidity is increased, participants are expected to reap even greater benefits such as significantly reduced costs and expanded reach to incremental buyers and sellers, as well as facilitated sourcing and the ability to reduce inventory through spot buying or auctions. ``E-marketplaces demonstrate just how much the Internet is transforming business-to-business commerce across all industries,'' said Capellas. ``Customers are realizing that e-marketplaces must be a part of their business models. They provide valuable opportunities to increase supply chain efficiency, increase revenue and deliver greater customer value. The Compaq- Commerce One alliance will help customers of all sizes use the Internet to build a competitive business advantage.'' ``Expanding our partnership with Compaq is a natural progression of our successful existing relationship, which we believe has contributed to Commerce One's success and growth globally,'' said Mark Hoffman, President and CEO of Commerce One. ``We expect that this relationship is and will be a key driver in Commerce One's goal to move the world's business commerce onto the Internet.'' Accelerating the Adoption of B2B-E-Commerce Solutions The two-year agreement calls for the two companies to collaborate on optimizing the performance and deployment of e-marketplace solutions including buyer and supplier on-ramps, and forward and reverse auction services, on state-of-the-art Compaq ProLiant(TM) servers. Although not obligated under the terms of the agreement, Compaq and Commerce One intend to also collaborate to optimize and promote the Microsoft Windows NT and Windows 2000 platforms as Commerce One's lead platform, and to develop and sell e-marketplace solutions based on the Windows platforms. Compaq Global Services -- with 40,000 experienced service professionals and already a key provider of systems integration services to Commerce One customers -- is expected to play an expanded role in delivering planning and implementation services to customers worldwide. It is anticipated that together, the two companies will offer customers unequalled performance, optimized reliability, scalability and availability in their e-business deployments. ``By working together, Commerce One and Compaq offer customers a powerhouse B-to-B e-commerce solution built on Microsoft's .NET Enterprise Servers,'' said Steve Ballmer, president and CEO of Microsoft. ``Together, they provide the combination of technology and execution needed to drive even more business to the Web.''
