Alcatel Maintains Mobile Phone Sales Forecast For '00

Dow Jones Online News, 09/19/2000 10:03

PARIS -(Dow Jones)- French telecommunications equipment supplier Alcatel SA (ALA) said Tuesday that it has no reason to revise its forecast that sales of mobile-phone handsets will total more than 20 million in 2000.

"I can assure you that unlike some of its competitors, Alcatel isn't in a position to issue a warning," Alcatel mobile phone division director Jacques Combet said at a press conference.

Combet said Alcatel has sold 10 million handsets in the first half of this year, giving it a world market share of around 13%.

Last week, electronics equipment maker Sagem (F.SAG) revised downward its estimate of the number of phones it will sell this year to "above 14 million," from earlier estimates of more than 18 million.

Combet said some mobile phone makers inflated their forecasts earlier this year to increase pressure on component makers which were facing difficulties to meet rocketing demand.

Alcatel will kick off a EUR46 million advertising campaign in mid-October in Europe, Asia and the Middle East to launch its latest high-end handsets, called One Touch 500 and 700.
