Bernie, I use the VIX only in conjunction with other indicators, it is a "fear/complacensy" indicator, but it must be also looked at with the details of who is buying the puts and calls (professionals or "amateurs"). It is useful when you look at the derivative of the curve and at extremes. It sure is not predicting a lot of "fear" here in the low 20'.
