HP investing in U.S. Wireless location network

NEW YORK, Sept 19 (Reuters) - Hewlett-Packard Co. <HWP.N>, the world's No. 3 computer company, said on Tuesday it had agreed to invest up to $52 million in the wireless location network planned by U.S. Wireless Corp. <USWC.O>.

The U.S. Wireless network will be capable of pinpointing the location of cellular users in emergency situations and enable users to access information and navigation assistance, the companies said in a statement.

Palo Alto, Calif.-based Hewlett-Packard will provide $7 million in financing and up to $45 million conditionally to create network operating and data processing centers for the network.

In addition, Hewlett-Packard will provide the Internet infrastructure and hardware products necessary to support the future growth of the network.

Shares of Hewlett-Packard were up $1-5/16 to $104-3/8 in late-morning New York Stock Exchange trade, while shares of San Ramon, Calif.-based U.S. Wireless rose $1-3/8 to $17.

OT: S. China Sea oil:

Yes, but the problem is that the oil is claimed by China (both of them), Phillipines, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia. They'll need not just drilling rigs, but a blue-water Navy to defend it, if they go after that oil. And, as long as ownership is contested, the multinational oil companies aren't going to be real interested in investing there.
