Bob - take a look at "Compaq TaskSmart Appliance Servers: Computing Paradigm of the Future" which is off of
www6.compaq.com at
ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/products/servers/tasksmart/tasksmart-whitepaper.pdf
for a look at where CPQ sees this market going.

Why does Sun want to get into a business where a Volume player like CPQ or DELL will be driving product at 20% GM and 5% Net? What does that do to SUNW's balance sheet?

As far as "10's of billions worth of hardware in the future", I don't see it. The whole market won't reach that level for years if ever. SUNW will be competing for that business with companies which already have a huge server business, run at less than half of SUNW's margins, and dominate the low end server space already.
