Wow, WoW, WOW!!! What an article.

"We like AMD. The enemy of our enemy is our friend," Jonathan Schwartz, Sun's senior vice president of corporate strategy and planning, said in an

Maverick,

Intel made the stupid mistake of making an enemy out of Sun with IA-64. It sent 2 bad messages to the industry:
1. Sun is the leader in the server space and Intel is not getting that business. Compaq and IBM support will always be lukewarm due to Alpha and PowerPC. So, what kind of volumes can Intel muster anyway? why should anyone else support IA-64?
2. Why is Intel calling Sun an enemy? Is intel in the systems business? If so, why the heck should any OEM get IA-64 from Intel? To become an Intel distributor? How do they win that game against Dell?

IA-64 story got progressively worse over the last year and now the ball is in AMD's court. AMD can earn its stripes by executing well on the Hammer project and getting Sun and the industry behind AA64 (x86-64). This is a long term story though and Hammer slipping into 2002 made things a bit tougher for AMD.

Chuck

Maverick:

"The deal also means that Sun, at least for the time being, will be incorporating two foreign technologies into its product line: Intel-compatible Advanced Micro Devices CPUs and the Linux operating system.
Sun like AMD, is duking it out with No. 1 chipmaker Intel to win as large a presence as possible in the future computing market.

Comment 1: Fabulous news...AMD's outstanding "spry Athy" is after only one year attracting the attention of the "industry biggies"...

Comment 2: Gotta like the direction this is taking!!!
