Because they would (probably) have to raise prices and do too much software work. The customers don't care about the innards. They do care about the perception of seamless continuity.

To me, part of the opportunity is a measured, seamless transition to the Sun brand and Sun components while getting through into the low-end (Non-)intel commodity world in a way that makes it look like a plain old extension of the existing Sun product line. That's what I love about the deal. I don't just think putting a new badge on a rejiggered Sparcstation accomplishes that *by itself. Yes, obviously it's going to be done like that eventually. In the meantime, I would start turning up the heat by putting out a bunch of Sun-badged kick-ass AMD thunderbird boxes (almost no hardware work) with Solaris Intel ("minor" software work) as soon as practical, Linux in the meantime. Behind the scenes the emphasis is on "rapidly" (if that word means anything at Sun these days) tying everything into the whole Sun product line while still keeping it CHEAP.

BWDIK. Maybe Zander bought it because it's near a restaurant he likes.
