I guess there is two things we agree on:

1) Getting rid of Bell is good.

2) ATT simply told Bell what to say.

Why it is announced like this is something we have to guess at. My guess is internal politics at ATT. Way too much coincidence going on with the ATT meeting. My guess is that Armstrong has someone picked out already and wants to push his man and plan through at the meeting. If he sensed that he was going to have roadblocks at the meeting from Malone or someone, then this move forces the issue. Bell can not be saved now. Malone kind of likes Bell because he is a "content man". Armstrong can now say "Bell will still be around - look - we gave him another label. Bell is kind of adviser. Now let's hire CEO with some background."
