These guys may have worked for the CIA;-)

"Speaking at Amazon's analyst and investor day conference in Fernley, Nev., Diego Piacentini, Amazon's international general manager, said, "I think we do have a great chance to be profitable in the early stages" compared withy the company's United States operations.

The executive declined to provide those attending with an average profit margin for Amazon's European distribution center. He said margins vary widely, depending on products, and on the retailing regulations in different European nations.
"

The question was for an average. When one takes an average, they add in all the different margins and then divide that number by the number of various products and locations that they used to add up the margins. It would seem a company that is buring $3 million daily of their investor's cash would know what their gross profit margin is. My opinion is they wish to hide this number. Itis a trade secret<VBG> Gross margins in retail always have been;-)
