Petz Re...<<<Service and dependability sells very well indeed.<<<<

Yes they do and that is why trucking will continue to pick up freight, not because it is cheaper, but because it is faster and more dependable.

The cost of maintaining the tracks far exceeds any property tax subsidy. And fuel taxes do not pay all of the costs of maintenance of the interstates, local roads, etc. <<<

But, it is a subsidy nonetheless. As far as I know gas taxes do pay all of the new road as well a repair costs. The big problem is keeping the politicians from diverting the money into their pet projects.

<<<If truckers would have to pay at the rate they destroy the roads (a truck damages a road equivalent to 40 cars (or more)), trucking fuel would cost about $4.00 a gallon more than it does now. Cars are subsidizing heavy trucks big time. If truckers had to charge $1.00 a mile per load more (basically doubling per mile rates now), trains would be the standard way of going intercity for freight.<<<<

IF IF IF. If the rabbit wouldn't have stopped to take a sh*t he would have beat the turtle. The truth is that trains don't operate well with just in time manufacturing as it takes longer. With trucks you can haul small loads and pretty well go point to point. With trains you have to truck the loads to a terminal, shift the load to railroad trucks, go to the railyard, load the trains, unload the train at the nearest major terminal, reload the load into local haul semi. With full rail car loads, such as lumber, coal, autos, etc. you can eliminate the loading and reloading steps, which is why trains mainly haul basic , full railcar commodities . Trucks are increasing business not because they are cheaper, but because it is faster and more convenient.
