chic,

It would be a great deal for SUN, but I would rather have AMD stay independent and spin off the flash business themselves. The value of our AMD investment would triple over night and then triple again over the next year. Over the last few months we alternatively have been getting hit with "flash over supply" and then "processor over supply or demand scares". If the company were split, we would have two great companies with half the criticism going to each. Both now have strong enough foundations to stand on their own. If AMD cared about shareholder value, they would do this.

Pravin.

Chick,
RE:"Sun should just buy AMD for $20 billion."

Jim

chic, I agree that AMD looks like an attractive buyout target, compared to many other companies with inflated stock prices but considerably less going for them that are being snapped up. If AMD had to be bought out, I'd much rather see it bought by IBM than Sun, IBM has good process technology and a big research operation in support of it.

The trouble with a hypothetical AMD buyout is that the most logical buyers are computer makers, and if any one computer maker bought AMD, it would very much hurt sales prospects with all the other box makers. The PC market is pretty fragmented, I don't think Dell has much more than 20%.

Cheers, Dan.
