Mission Critical Linux Delivers High Availability to Intel's IA-64 Architecture

-- First Linux HA Cluster to be Ported to Intel's New Technology --
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 15, 2000-- Mission Critical Linux, Inc., the cutting-edge Linux products and services company, has become the first to port Linux HA clustering technology to Intel's IA-64 architecture. Utilizing a Convolo Cluster built on Open Source Kimberlite technology developed by Mission Critical Linux, high availability is provided to applications such as the Open Source MySQL database and Apache web servers running on IA-64. The combined system is being demonstrated in the Intel Booth (#1044) at LinuxWorld San Jose and at several other upcoming industry events, including the Intel Developers Forum August 22-24 in San Jose. Implemented as a back-end HA system for dynamic data, the IA-64/Convolo Cluster is seamlessly integrated with an IA-32 Intel web server farm.

``The porting of our clustering capabilities to IA-64 is attracting significant industry interest,'' said Brian Stevens, Vice President of Internet Strategy at Mission Critical Linux. ``The combined technology creates a powerful solution for achieving high availability and raw computing power in high-end databases.''

The system being demonstrated uses a Convolo Cluster to guarantee high availability for front-end, Intel-based servers. The redundant web servers access the main databases through a two-node cluster configuration that uses RAID-protected shared storage disks to ensure the integrity of dynamic data during transactions. The cluster server nodes, which are connected to a shared RAID storage controller, keep track of all dynamic data entering the databases; when one node shuts down or fails, the other node accesses the disk and uses transaction logs to recover the database and continue operation. By leveraging advanced Kimberlite technology, the Convolo Cluster can match the performance of proprietary cluster systems in providing high availability without data corruption in enterprise computing environments.

IA-64 and Intel® Itanium(TM) Processors

Intel's IA-64 is a new enterprise processor architecture designed from the ground-up to meet the needs of the Internet economy and high-end server and workstation application requirements. Platforms based on the first processor in the IA-64 family, known as the Intel Itanium processor, are being designed to deliver higher levels of scalability, performance, and availability. The advanced features of the Itanium processor platform combined with its breadth of industry support and IA-32 instruction set compatibility will benefit enterprise and technical computing applications such as enterprise resource planning, decision support, scientific computing, and mechanical design.

``High-performance clustering technology using open industry standards has become an efficient means to achieving high availability for demanding enterprise and technical computing applications,'' said Jason Waxman, Intel IA-64 marketing manager. ``The combination of Mission Critical Linux's cluster technology running on Intel Itanium processor platforms will deliver the scalability, flexibility, and high availability that is critical to the emerging computing requirements of today's businesses.''

This new Itanium processor compatible software is a ground-up rewrite of the existing code to fully take advantage of the latest Intel 64-bit architecture, as well as newly enhanced capability in the Wacom Intuos® tablets. The software will include many new features for 2D and 3D painting and texture mapping not previously seen on any platform at any price. This development has been done in close consultation with Intel and Wacom. Shipping is anticipated to be close to the commercial shipping of Itanium processor-based workstations. Users of existing software will be eligible for a special upgrade offer when the new versions are available.

``Intel has really got it right with this new processor architecture. We are very excited about the possibilities this new IA-64 chip offers us,'' says Chris Blackbourn, Lead Developer IA-64 Program, Right Hemisphere.

``Intel works together with companies such as Right Hemisphere to bring industry-leading 3D content technology to the IA-64 platform,'' said John Thomas, marketing manager, Digital Media Solutions Division. ``Intel is collaborating with Right Hemisphere to ensure that Deep Paint 3D with Texture Weapons and its users can take full advantage of IA-64 and the Itanium processor.''

``Right Hemisphere's 3D paint and texturing software takes unique advantage of Wacom's Intuos graphics tablet system, including the first ever digital airbrush, pressure-sensitive pens, and Wacom's 4D mouse. Wacom is excited to work with Intel and Right Hemisphere to bring the best graphics input tools and solutions over to the Intel IA-64 platform. In combination with Right Hemisphere's software, visual arts and design customers will benefit from the performance in significant ways,'' Scott Rawlings, director of Marketing, Wacom Technology Corp.

``The Itanium processor architecture enables us to create 3D painting technology that exceeds anything done in this space before. As a result, the new version of Deep Paint 3D with Texture Weapons will be a landmark in 3D computer graphics,'' Mark Thomas, CEO of Right Hemisphere.

About Deep Paint 3D

Deep Paint 3D provides designers with authentic artistic media such as oils, watercolors, crayons and pastels that can be ``brushed'' directly onto 3D models. With a single stroke Deep Paint 3D paints complete material or shader definitions, and can be used to easily brush surface textures, such as skins or various types of wood, directly onto objects. Other features include multi-layer support for bump, color, shine, opacity, and glow channels; 3D masking and selection tools, including a 3D polygon selection tool; full NURBS support for 3d studio max®, Maya® and Softimage®. Other file formats supported for import and export are .OBJ/.MTL, .3DS and .LWO (Lightwave 3D® 6.0) Complete with a bi-directional interface to Photoshop® and special support for the Wacom Intuos or compatible pressure sensitive tablet.

About Texture Weapons

Texture Weapons for Deep Paint 3D, is a breakthrough in 3D texturing and painting, drastically reducing the time to create the highest quality surface texturing for polygonal and NURBS models. Texture Weapons help create virtually distortion-free texturing for 3D work in film, broadcast or the web. It includes MercatorUV(TM) technology for generation and editing of UV mapping, and the new automatic V.A.M.P.(TM) mapping technology for automatic generation of UV mapping for polygonal models. Texture Weapons also include the new Projection Paint, which enables painting from any angle on NURBS or polygonal models, with brush size unaffected by UV coordinate variations.
