A fine post sir, but remember---Luther, like the Pope is not infallible. Did you know that Luther didn't believe the book of James should be in the Bible? As far as Cavinism goes, our biases do not allow us to be very objective.
In any event, it is difficult to alter the meaning of John 3:16 that says: "whosoever believeth in him should not perish..." I wish you well in your research on this topic...of course there is abuse on both sides of this theology. The 14th Commandment is: "Thou shalt have balance" :)

Dear Greg,
Thank you for your thoughtful response. The verses I quoted are from Jonah and the point is that God said that he has raised up these people that are clearly sinners and cares for them. Jonah knew He was gracious, loving, and compassionate and sometimes any teaching taken to extremes can loose the love of God imo. There are enough verses that go either way about selection and predestination that we have to honestly say that God will have mercy on however He will have mercy and we must be obedient to teach every person the gospel as Jesus commanded. When I read Calvinism my inner reaction is why witness they are saved anyway so why do it?
I am not familiar with the John 6 passage you are referring to. Please share and I will tell you what I think. How about Romans 8:
29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son that he may be the first born among many brothers. 30 And those he predestined he also called, those he called he also justified. those he justified he also glorified.

I think the key here is foreknew. God foreknows who will believe and who will not. That is not a selection as we think of selection. We know he desires that non should perish but that all have eternal life but He knows that not all will receive the message as not all Israel looked up to the snake to be healed.
While we were yet sinners God loved us because he loves the whole world and sends rain on the just and the unjust.
A word of caution you might want to read some of Luther's late works like The Jews And Their Lies before you take his teachings to heart. I am very skeptical of his work because of his intense anti Semitism and hate revealed in his old age.
For me the rule is that Jesus told us to love others as he has loved us. He came to earth to reveal his father to us and save us. So we should desire to reveal the Father to everyone we meet and let God decide who is saved and how. I am just very grateful that I know and believe in Jesus and that I have a relationship with Him now and forever.
May the Lord Bless You,
Nancy
