SECOND HARVEST........everything you said is absolutely the gospel truth.

I managed a food pantry in Northern Illinois for 12 years. Whenever we needed food we were able to go to Second Harvest and pickup 4-7 tons. Through the years the cost to the pantry rose from .10 to .14 per pound to pay for the tremendous warehousing operations they manage. We received the expensive cereals ($4-5 per box), all the Helper meals, mac and cheese, canned fruits, vegetables, tuna. And usually some treats for the kids, Reese's peanut butter cups, M&Ms, chips, etc. Kids need junk food no matter what financial shape their family is in. We served 600 families per month. Each family was eligible once a month for a food order and also for Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. With our donated funds we bought eggs, bread, milk, hamburger, and whatever else was needed to supply a nice food order to the family. We had over 100 volunteers, delivered about 125 orders each month to shut ins.

I've been away from the food pantry for six years now but from what I see on the news the need is greater than ever due to families being removed from the food stamp program.

Now I crochet stocking caps and ship them up north where the winters are cold. I have two shipments ready here now to go to Peoria and Ottawa IL, 150 hats total, which is one year's production for me. Made over 2000 hats in ten years. I can crochet and watch my stock screens so the time spent in front of this computer is not a total waste (LOL).

I never realized the depth of the problems of the needy among us until I became involved so many years ago. I had just never been around needy people until then. And now that I spent twelve years among them and know of their plight, I will always remember to help them out in some small way.

Thanks for bringing Second Harvest to the thread as you do each year. We all need to be reminded of those folks who have never had the education and the good fortune that most of us have had.
