Hi sylvester80; Re "paper" launch of DDR by VIA...

VIA doesn't sell motherboards, so why would you expect them to be available? It takes time to get product out. When it is available, you will be able to buy it from motherboard makers first, then the box makers.

The 1997 product was for a different version of DDR (before SSTL-2), one that the marketplace didn't want. VIA did ship the VP3, but it was used entirely as an SDRAM chipset. Since nobody was using it for DDR, they eventually removed the DDR interface, if I remember correctly. The '97 DDR interface was dropped because of lack of demand by the motherboard houses. At that time, processor speeds were still slow enough that SDRAM provided enough performance. Three years later, CPUs have speeded up, and VIA is a much bigger company.

That's why this DDR launch has VIA getting so many supporting companies involved. I counted Gigabyte, Abit, Asustek, and Microstar as supporters of the new VIA DDR solution, they will be the first place to look for motherboards.
