This is really a great surprise, because we were led to believe that this chipset wont' be available until Q1'2001, and supposed to be out many months after Intel's version. Actually I'm more surprised that none of the other regular posters didn't make any comment on this. Where did we get Q1'2001 time line for VIA's KT-166 chipset? Not from VIA. VIA website has this info all along - VIA will be producing performance and integrated DDR chipsets for both VIA Cyrix® III/Intel® Pentium® III and AMD Athlon™ processors starting in 2H 2000. It's one of the hardware sites that promulgated that KT-166 won't be out till Q1'2001. Thanks to one of the posters on the JC's board, I got this link to Sharky's article on VIA's roadmap. Here is one of the experts from that article -sharkeyextreme.com "________ [...] VIA should have their first Athlon DDR266 chipset finished or near finished by the end of 2000. Board makers had various opinions on whether or not VIA would be on time with DDR, but nobody we spoke with seemed to expect VIA or AMD Athlon DDR266 boards to actually hit the market before 2001. Believe it or not, the best hope for a shipping Athlon DDR266 chipset within the year 2000 comes from the homely ALi. If ALi can ship a chipset before VIA, ALi will be in a very strong position, much unlike their current bottom-of-the-market position. We did see several boards floating around behind the scenes with ALi chipsets, so it looks like the motherboard maker support will be there if ALi can ship first and they can get their production up. These are all very large "ifs." But...we thought we had to mention one tiny little thing. It looks like VIA will be producing their first P6 DDR chipset well before their K7 DDR chipset... possibly months before. At COMPUTEX, AMD and VIA looked like the greatest buddies in the world, holding conferences together, announcing the Athlon Thunderbird together and posturing for the press, and indeed the two companies are very close. But VIA knows where the money is. AMD isn't the first kid on the playground to get a black eye from Intel. ____________ When the above was published by Sharky, I remember seeing posts on this board from many regulars here venting frustration with VIA. Sharky site also predicted that AMD 600MHz Athlon won't be available in DYI market until Q1'2000. Hope some body can find the link to this classic page on Sharky's, which I believe was published in Jun'99 - Sept'99 timeframe. The same guys also said in Sept'99(or Oct'99) that AMD will not release any more higher speed grades of Athlon until the end of Q4'99, but to their surprise AMD released not one but two more higher MHz Athlons before the end of Q4'99. I strongly believe Sharkys is big fudster site when it comes to AMD. Please bookmark their pages containing any speculations about AMD or it's partner's roadmaps/products. The bookmarks may come handy to prove how inaccurate they can be when it comes to AMD. goutama
