An open letter to musicians and pirates:

Musicians: Give your music away for free and you will NEVER make money from your music, no matter how big you get. Destroying the record industry by promoting Napster will likewise destroy the livlihoods of the artists that you admired as a kid.

Pirates: [Otherwise known as anyone who uploads or downloads music without paying for it]. If we allow music piracy to continue unabated as it is on Napster and bands like Guns & Roses will soon be history.

Think about what that would be like in the future if we don't stop the piracy. For instance. . . . Slash might not make any money selling his solo album via the net, because only 1 out of 1000 downloads are paid, due to Napster, Gnutella and the like. . .the record companies are not making money, so they must drop 60% of their artists, leaving Guns & Roses without a contract. Axl Rose might no longer afford his habits and lifestyle and would be forced to file bankruptcy. . .shortly thereafter, perhaps attempting suicide. . . while Duff McKagan might be forced to go on welfare. . .because as he would then say, "there just isn't any money left in the record biz, now that the kids and Napster have destroyed it. Know anyone who is hiring?".

If you are not paying for the music you listen to, you are contributing to a problem larger than you have perhaps imagined.

Remember. . . . Your actions DO have consequences.
