>E-tailers -- who needs them 10 months a year?

Get-rich tip: Open your e-commerce site two months of the year.

With all the reports of skyrocketing expectations for Internet retailers during the two-month shopping madness also known as the holiday season, it is a wonder that e-commerce sites even bother staying open the other 10 months of the year.

Forrester Research released its holiday spending estimates today and reported that consumers will spend $10 billion -- nearly two times last year's figures -- clicking merrily on those "buy" buttons between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day.

A report by another Internet research group, Jupiter Communications, released Monday, estimates that online holiday sales -- those made from Nov. 1 through Dec. 31 -- will grow to $11.6 billion in 2000, up 66 percent from the $7 billion spent in 1999.

Since companies only make a fraction of that amount during the rest of the year, they could probably save a lot of money taking a long, off-season vacation.
