JDS Uniphase riding bandwidth

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) - Jozef Straus, JDS Uniphase's chief executive, gave some assurances Wednesday to investors in sagging optical networking issues.

"We feel the explosion of bandwidth is going to continue unabated," Straus said at the Banc of America securities investment conference in San Francisco.

JDS Uniphase (JDSU: news, msgs) executives also gave an update of the company's planned acquisition of SDL (SDLI: news, msgs), announced in July.

The company is in the midst of inquiries by the Department of Justice. The company can't say at this point if it will have to make any concessions to regulators concerning the deal.

The acquisition is expected to close in December. JDS Uniphase will exchange 3.8 of its shares for each SDL share in a deal initially valued at more than $40 billion.

Also, JDS Uniphase executives said the company is making cost cutting moves by installing Oracle's human resources software. The company expects to have completed the installation by by July 2001
