<<smartdrv.sys>>

Sorry for the delay in responding. I was working on a Win2000 machine last week and I had to convert my WinME machine at my other house to boot into DOS (See www.langa.com for the how to). Anyway, smartdrv.sys was the original microsft disk caching software and was later replaced by smartdrv.exe. Under Windows 3.1 you could add parameters on the command line for how much memory to use in DOS and windows (if you were using windows 32 bit driver). ie smartdrv 2048 128. The 128 Kbytes was useful for caching a device using a real mode driver such as a floppy.

I set up the following configuration on my WinME machine:
CONFIG.SYS

[MENU]
menuitem=WinME
menuitem=DOS
menudefault=Winme,5
menucolor=15,1

[COMMON]
device=c:\windows\ifshlp.sys

[WinME]

[DOS]

AUTOEXEC.BAT

@echo off
goto %config%
:DOS
c:\windows\smartdrv.exe
:WinME
SET windir=C:\WINDOWS
SET winbootdir=C:\WINDOWS
SET COMSPEC=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM
SET PROMPT=$p$g
SET TEMP=C:\TEMP
SET TMP=c:\TEMP
SET PATH=C:\WINDOWS;c:\windows;c:\windows\COMMAND;C:\WINDOWS\Twain_32\SwUSB;C:\WINDOWS\Twain_32\SwUSB
if %config%==WinME C:\WINDOWS\WIN.COM

Using the above configuration it takes under 2 seconds to deltree the temporary internet directory (1300 files). If you comment out the line with smartdrv it takes over 4 minutes to do the same thing. I have not tried it under Win98 yet. You may need to add himem.sys into the config.sys file to setup the XMS memory. Don't recall.
