I know all that Greg. The point is Luther was too intolerant too brook any disagreement- even from people who he had formerly admired. Erasmus was a humanist. Not as the term is understood today- but in his own time he was. I can give you the pages in Barzun's book if you want to research the matter further. I'm guessing you know even less about Luther and Erasmus that I do. I can give you a recommendation for a top notch book on Erasmus I am planning to read in the near future.

A brief search on the internet and a spitting out of something you found there doesn't really constitute a superbly well informed opinion. Although I like Barzun's approach, and know him to be a brilliant synthesizer- since I have read his earlier books- I want to read some first hand sources, as I don't even trust the brilliant Barzun to inform me perfectly. I've read bits of Luther. But not much Erasmus.
