On the SPR, what are the implications of using it in peacetime, when there is no strategic threat? Is it not a kind of slippery slope, why at 37 dollars, why not at 25 or 30 dollars a barrel etc.
Also releasing it 4 weeks before the elections will raise a lot of questions among the pundits who have nothing better to do.
Finally has the SPR been at 571 MM barrels for a very long time ? because if it is a cold war legacy, I am sure the Kudlows of the world will point out that the world is a much safer place now and that we do not need that much and shoud dump it now.
The SPR release will work only if OPEC and big oil is fully behind the idea of 22 -28 $ oil, if it is a unilateral decision to show who is the boss, it may eventually just increase their resolve. It would also decimate the oil industry, as they get no help when prices are at 10 but are expected to give up their time in the sun when prices are above 35, Investors would decide that it pays to invest in drug monopolies and software monopolies but not in rig and tubing and seismic companies.
