No, cutting the dividend would send a very bad signal. To Wall Street and to us orphans. Whatever dividend policy a company has - no dividend, constant dividend, fixed % payout of earnings, or an increasing dividend every year - the company MUST stick with that policy. Now you might think that dividends are an antiquated thing or that we are talking policy here and "policies" have to change as the times change. With respect to dividends (of a company which has a dividend), you would be wrong. A dividend cut or a dividend suspension - indicates that managers as well as the BOD have concluded that the outlook is dire with absolute drastic action being called for. A dividend suspension is a sign for investors to seriously consider selling the stock.
