Maverick,

Just as I pointed out few posts ago that VIA might be feeling heat from the other Athlon Chipset makers, now I see an article from Asiabiztech along the same line:

VIA Technologies to Lose Sole Dominance of Chipset Market

September 21, 2000 (TAIPEI) -- VIA Technologies Inc., Silicon Integrated Systems Corp. and Acer Laboratories Inc. are releasing chipsets that support AMD's Athlon processor in the fourth quarter, thus ending the sole dominance of VIA Technologies in the market.

Silicon Integrated Systems will produce 730S chipsets in October, and Acer Laboratories is ready to mass produce DDR chipsets in order to support AMD.

VIA Technologies announced on Sept. 17 that the company is to mass produce integrated KM133 chipsets, beginning around November. The KM133 chipset, centering on the S3 graphic chip of Savage, has been produced to support AMD's Athlon. As for DDR chipsets, VIA Technologies is scheduled to release the product in October.

VIA Technologies is expected to achieve a shipment level of 6 million units, or a 1 million growth in shipments compared to August, translating into revenues of more than NT$4.5 billion. (NT$31.24 = US$1) As Silicon Integrated Systems and Acer Laboratories are now ready to compete for chipset sales, related products from VIA Technologies will face vigorous competition on prices. As a result, the company predicted that it may not be able to maintain the same gross profit rate earned in the second quarter, but VIA Technologies is confident that its gross profit will stay above 32 percent, as in the first quarter.

The competition among these chipset makers is going to be great for consumers as well as for AMD. Now with the competition looming, VIA can't afford to miss their schedule on releasing KT266 and KM133 chipsets, or they can't just give a low priority to Athlon chipsets than the priority it gives to Intel chipsets.
