A footnote on the completion of the last mile and the beginning of the last inch?

Last mile projects started with coast to coast pipe laying. Nodes and tap-ins were not obvious in the beginning. Now Enron wants to put in 1000 servers to distribute surplus braodband capacity much the same idea as energy grids. This is the start of a mesh network. It is ideally suited because fiber optics has to have repeater every maximum length. Repeaters can be nodes for tap-ins. Satellite bypass where there are no pipes, can be an easy solution. The lack of overall planning in the US is obvious. It may take Enron and such to work out a comprehensive mesh network.

Regarding the last inch projects, these are networks within a building. There are a need for a comprehensive scaleable plan to handle the vast backbones and headends, sometimes with satellite feeds; then there are also switches for intranets.

A complete plan would forecast the total investment in US on the infrastructure of communications, each year. It is never too late.
