Sylvester,

Here are some DDR vs. PC133 vs. DRDRAM latency benchmarks:

most applications are very sensitive to memory system latency. To compare access latency, we analyzed these latencies as reported by Cachemem. The second column indicates the amount of data transferred. While Cachemem also generates latency numbers for transfers below 1024KB, we only look at the 1024KB numbers and above to make sure that the L2-cache latency does not overly influence the results.

For this test only, we included a few numbers from an i820 system. You can clearly see that the latency of Rambus DRAM is substantially higher than that of SDRAM.

Sylvester,

Here is the one thing we know about P4 CPU prices. They will be much cheaper than people expected:

"In October, the P4 will be introduced at speeds of 1.4 and 1.5GHz. Intel has set aggressive pricing for these two speed grades – namely $795 and $695 at launch according to its current pricing schedule. Many have expected Intel to launch at prices over $1000.

I was referring to the cost, rather than the price of P4. The manufacturing costs are at least double, and probably closer to 5X PIII. The lower than expected prices are an indication of the lower than expected performance.

An OEM said: Stevens added that Tiny has no plans for Pentium 4 this year, referring to the forthcoming chip as 'very expensive'.
