This must be very hard to measure... the increase probably stems from more money being allocated to this type of company as opposed to the revaluation of existing assets. Just my guess.

Yes, I simply called it "private equity" to distinguish it from claims on ownership in public firms... it was my lack of clear language. I'm going to make an FOIA request to the Fed to explain some of their data collection methods w.r.t. tangible assets. Who knows, they may be assigning value to stocks and mutual fund shares hedonically! Increased regulation and greater corporate transparency makes equity shares more valuable, right? -g-

In any case, the Fed generally responds within 20 business days to these types of requests. I'll let you know when I get an answer.
