I had a series of meetings with DELL management a few weeks back which provided some interesting perspectives...

- DELL sees two major drivers of future growth - global expansion and enterprise server and storage products.

- The latest numbers from industry analysts confirm DELL is growing significantly faster than the industry in all geographies and major product areas and may very well hit their 30% growth targets for this year and beyond.

- DELL no longer views their competition as CPQ (they believe they have all but put the last nail in that coffin) and have turned their attention to SUNW and EMC.

- DELL believes their low cost structure will allow them to profitably sell their enterprise server and storage products for less than SUNW and EMC can manufacture their products. They view this advantage akin to a Judo move where the opponents' own momentum can be used against them.

- DELL does not use the Gorilla Game vernacular (in fact they have their own curious Dellspeak for almost everything) but does understand the issue of architecture control and believes their efficiency-driven business model will win in any market where architectural control does not exist.

- They have a smart and intensely focused management team determined to fulfill the above scenarios.

What I can't figure out is why they don't just buy NTAP. (Of course, it would have been a lot better if they would've had the prescience to buy them a year ago when their market cap was < $5 billion instead of the current $42 billion.)

Intel & Nvidia Inside

Highlights:

Nvidia's media communications processor, dubbed the MCPX, will handle advanced audio along with connections to networking, storage and other components.

The chip, which accompanies an Nvidia graphics chip and Intel Pentium III processor inside the game console, includes support for broadband and dial-up Internet access, further proof that Microsoft's upcoming Xbox is shaping up to be more than just a game machine. With this chip, Microsoft can market the box as a home networking station.

But Nvidia's new silicon will also play a part in grander plans at Nvidia to occupy more real estate inside PCs and to put the company in direct competition with Intel and Via Technologies.

Taken together, the multimedia and graphics chips Nvidia is making for the Xbox can supplant most of the companion chips that accompany a microprocessor inside a PC.
