Some more anecdotal evidence...

I spoke with a local dealer in Germany (Bremen near Hamburg at the coast) and with the European representative for G* ELSACOM.

The local shop told me that they just ordered their second set of 65 G* phones. They are a marine outfit shop and also sell the boat kit. They promised me to send me a prospectus but nothing happened yet, so customer service can improve on this front. They mostly sell to those marine customers as Bremen is a harbour city.

There is one European Gateway in Italy near Rome, the other in Finland. I asked them how many customers they had in Europe already. They were a bit reluctant but they hinted that it was around 1.000 so far, which is not so great.

Then again, if they can 1.000 phones in Europe where mobile phone coverage is ubiquitious, then they should be able to sell even much more. Also, this summer was the first time that I saw a G* phone in Europe (well, not actually in use, at a Ericsson stand at a festival. It is not really widely advertised yet.
