Clapster, actually, to ring the bell means a third thing as well.

In the Canadian Legion Halls (and I imagine American Legions as well) there is a large brass bell situated at the end of the bar with a huge chain hanging from it.

To ring that bell means you're buying a round for the house - usually, whatever the patrons want.

So, better get your bell out cause I'm thinking I want to give that chain a long hard pull.
