The decades old entrenched thinking about Intel under current market conditions is the problem:

1] Intel is still trading at twice it's ten year normal valuation. A P/E of 57 is too high for a low growth giant cap company.

2] Intel's monopoly in the mid-high end desktop marketplace is being successfully challenged. Intel still holds the majority of the space but AMD is encroaching. Intel has everything to lose and AMD has everything to gain.

3] AMD only needs to gain a few percent of the high value desktop market to win big profits. Intel's loss of only a few percentage points means a lower margin product mix. It also means tougher pricing scrutiny all around. You may not lose your job buying Intel despite their flaky stability problems above 1 Ghz but you must buy the questionable quality systems at a good price. I know, Intel will soon have Pentium IV that will kick Duron's butt and almost match Athlon but that isn't today. Or maybe Intel marketing will push to announce the release of 1.5 Ghz chips next week. Wow, the big heads have spoken, time to buy Intel.

AMD will get clobbered, Intel will get clobbered. Reality isn't as bad as it seems. Intel has limited earnings growth expectations and few prospects for pulling a genie out of the bottle going forward. They just don't have much upside left in the old monopoly. AMD isn't made of gold but is undervalued. They have mastered new manufacturing processes and designs and have large markets (Intel's monopoly) to expand into. Both are great companies with great products. As an investment I like AMD for the long term. Both will become great short-term buys by early next week - particularly if you can catch the huge price swings that are likely.
