"Digital Cameras on Track for TRIPLE-DIGIT GAIN!!!"
PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. (Reuters) - Sales of digital cameras are on track for triple-digit growth by the end of this year and could reach 4.2 million units in the United States, according to a report released on Thursday.

NPD Intellect, a market research group, said sales of the increasingly popular cameras will likely register a 127 percent gain over last year's 1.85 million units.

At the same time, it said that despite falling prices, total sales should reach $1.8 billion by the end of the year, up from $1 billion in 1999. According to NPD, the average price of a digital still camera went down to $513 this year from $544 in 1999.

"With the strong demand of digital cameras and the holiday season upon us, the main issue the camera industry faces is not demand, but supply," said NPD Senior Manager Neil Portnoy.

"Camera manufacturers are concerned about shortages in key components of digital still cameras. The only question for the remainder of the year is -- will manufacturers be prepared to meet the insatiable appetite that consumers have for digital cameras? We'll just have to wait and see."

NPD said the Sony brand leads in both unit and dollar shares of the market. It listed the following market shares for the leading brands.
