At that time, Micron is expected to seize more than 50 percent of the DDR market. Several local DRAM giants, including Nanya Technology Corp. and Powerchip Semiconductor Corp., said they are taking Williams' prediction with a pinch of salt, but still planned to increase moderately their production of graphic DDR memory next year. They said that if DDR did indeed become the core product in the memory chip market after two years, Taiwan's four largest DRAM manufacturers would account for at least 20 percent of the global DDR market by output. Micron Tech said that SDRAM would win a market share double the size of DDR memory in 2001. The first generation of DDR memory is 128Mb (x 4, x 8) and 256Mb (x 4, x 8, x 16) high-speed 333MHz DDR memories. In 2002, DDR memory is expected to take the place of SDRAM in an upgraded 512Mb version. DDR memory will be fully developed by the end of this year, thanks to strong support from motherboard and relevant manufacturers, according to Micron Tech's study. The development process has also been speeded by the experience already gained in mature fundamental technologies, including sockets, chipsets, systems and memory. In Taiwan, Nanya Tech and Promos Technologies Inc. launched their DDR small-scale productions based on the 0.175-micron and 0.17-micron manufacturing processes in July. Winbond Electronics Corp. plans to introduce trial production of Rambus DRAM in October in preparation for manufacturing Toshiba's PS2 on a contract basis. (Commercial Times, Taiwan)
