WIND--Wind River Delivers New Java Solution for Smart, Connected Devices
Personal JWorks 3.1 Provides State-of-the-Art Update to Award-Winning Embedded Java Implementation
ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 22, 2000--Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND - news), a leading provider of software and services for smart devices in the Internet age, today announced Personal JWorks(TM) 3.1. Wind River's award-winning Personal JWorks product implements the latest PersonalJava(TM) specification on Wind River's VxWorks® real-time operating system and is tightly integrated with the Tornado® II development environment. Together, this technology provides state-of-the-art Java-based graphics technologies for developing unique user interfaces and graphics for devices including set-top boxes, Internet appliances, and car information systems. In addition, Personal JWorks' optimized features for embedded applications and availability on a large choice of processor architectures makes it an ideal solution for a wide variety of non-graphical, memory constrained Java-powered devices.

With shipments of embedded devices implementing Java technology expected to soar from 298,000 units in 1999 to 24.3 million units by 2003 (Venture Development Corporation), original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) will need reliable, robust Java solutions that meet the strict requirements of embedded systems development.

``Wind River is committed to providing complete software solutions to meet complex development needs for the Internet age,'' said John Fogelin, vice president and general manager of Wind River's Platforms business unit. ``Java technology represents a great framework for Internet service providers and OEMs to deliver services and create devices for markets such as consumer electronics, datacom/telecom, and industrial measurement and control. By delivering a fully integrated, proven embedded Java solution, Wind River allows developers to focus on their core expertise and get to market faster.''

Leading Java Solutions

Personal JWorks 3.1 improves the already popular features of the previous Personal JWorks version, voted best embedded Java product of the year 2000 by JavaPRO readers. By using the latest version of the PersonalJava specification, Wind River's Personal JWorks implementation allows developers to build on the industry standard for Java-based information appliances.

Personal JWorks 3.1 technology gives developers high graphics performance (4 to 6 times faster than the default PersonalJava reference implementation) and full support for all AWT classes and APIs. In addition, the Personal JWorks technology uses Wind River's WindML(TM) 2.0 multimedia framework, an ideal multimedia and graphics layer for embedded devices. Developers can leverage these capabilities to ease creation of connected devices with complex user interfaces, including those using font engines and video support. To further optimize Java applications, Wind River offers the TurboJ(TM) ahead-of-time compiler that provides 10 to 25 times performance improvement on Java bytecode execution as compared to interpreted bytecode.

PersonalJWorks 3.1 will be generally available in Q4 2000.
