But you answer your own problem. How many Americans believe that evolution should not be taught in schools?.....Well, not a lot, so what is there to be afraid of? On abortion, all that is necessary is to return to the status quo ante, and de- federalize the issue. It will not matter if Colin Powell is pro- choice if it is a matter for state by state legislation. On prayer, it is the antis who are unreasonable. Almost all evangelicals realize they cannot get prayer back in as a regular part of school exercises. Moments of silence are an effective compromise, but too many of the antis rant about that. And I still think there is no harm in allowing a non- sectarian benediction at commencement, in deference to the desire of the majority to solemnize the occasion.

About the possibility of segregated school academies: I believe in integration, raised my son in an integrated neighborhood, have mixed race nieces and a nephew, and yet I do think we have let it trump common sense. De facto segregation keeps creeping up, as housing patterns alter, and even in schools with diverse populations, self- segregation and "abilities tracking" has caused internal segregation, unless there is a similar socio- economic background. Meanwhile, we spend incredible amounts of money to pursue integration as a priority, draining resources from other things. If vouchers will help kids to learn, to hell with whether they are abused, do it. Similarly with affirmative action. If there are bad folks who don't like it for the wrong reasons, well, screw them. Do what is right.
